Lavender Cottage nestles in the quaint, picturesque and unique village of McGregor, a mere 15 minute journey from Robertson which is on the R62 and is 2 hours from Cape Town. The ‘Road to Nowhere’ that carries you from Robertson to McGregor is lined with vineyards, fruit farms, olive groves and the unique Klein Karoo veld. Ahead of you lie the majestic Riviersonderend Mountains, a backdrop to the village and a popular viewpoint and hiking spot for locals and visitors. The Vrolikheid Nature Reserve, dedicated to the preservation of the amazingly diverse fauna and flora of the Renosterveld, surrounds you as you near the village.
There are a number of annual events that attract visitors here during the year. The enormous Book Fair, the Poetry Festival, the Ride-to-Nowhere mountain bike race and a number of food and wine festivals. McGregor is a village that embraces and celebrates the arts and creativity, and one is sometimes spoilt for choice with regular events of live music and films. There are several art galleries, a photographic studio, and a pottery studio with a world renowned potter at work. There is also a choice of restaurants, coffee shops and pubs on offer as well as a garagiste winery in the middle of the village. Close by are a number of wine farms offering tastings of their top class vintages.
On Saturday mornings you will find most villagers and weekend visitors enjoying the morning market, filling their baskets with fresh veggies, farm eggs and delicious home baked goodies or just catching up on the week’s gossip over coffee and breakfast. A great place to meet the locals!
